Endovenous Laser Ablation in Seomyeon, Busan
Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) (정맥내 레이저 폐쇄술) closes a faulty leg vein from the inside using a thin laser fibre inserted through a needle puncture under ultrasound guidance. In Seomyeon, Busan, it typically takes about 30–60 minutes per leg under local tumescent anesthesia. You walk out the same day, wear compression as advised, and most people return to desk work within 1–3 days.

What is endovenous laser ablation?
EVLA (also called EVLT) is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping. A laser fibre is threaded inside the diseased vein and slowly withdrawn while emitting energy that heats and seals the vein wall. Blood then reroutes through healthy deep veins. Over the following months, the closed vein is gradually absorbed by the body. Modern lasers with longer wavelengths and radial fibres tend to cause less bruising than older systems.
Who is it for?
- People with symptomatic varicose veins and confirmed saphenous reflux on duplex ultrasound
- Those with skin changes or healed ulcers due to venous reflux
- Patients wanting a walk-in, walk-out procedure
It may not suit very tortuous veins, veins too close to the skin, or people with current deep vein thrombosis, severe arterial disease in the leg, pregnancy or inability to walk after the procedure.
What happens at the clinic
- Ultrasound mapping: the vein to be treated is marked on the skin.
- Access: after a small local anesthetic injection, a needle and sheath are placed into the vein.
- Fibre placement: the laser fibre is positioned just below the junction with the deep vein, under ultrasound.
- Tumescent anesthesia: dilute anesthetic fluid is injected around the vein to numb, compress and protect surrounding tissue.
- Ablation: the fibre is withdrawn while firing; you may feel warmth or pressure.
- Finish: branch veins may be treated, then compression applied and you walk.
Recovery and aftercare
Walk regularly from the same day. A pulling or tight sensation along the inner thigh or calf, like a pulled muscle, often peaks at several days and settles within 1–2 weeks. Wear compression stockings as instructed, avoid long hot baths, saunas and heavy exercise for about two weeks, and attend the follow-up ultrasound.
Risks and side effects
- Bruising, tenderness and tightness along the treated vein
- Superficial thrombophlebitis
- Nerve irritation causing patches of numbness, more often with below-knee treatment
- Skin burns, rare with proper tumescent technique
- Heat-induced thrombus extension into the deep vein or DVT, uncommon; checked on follow-up ultrasound
Choosing a clinic for EVLA in Seomyeon
- Choose a surgeon experienced in endovenous procedures and duplex ultrasound.
- Ask which laser wavelength and fibre type they use.
- Ask whether branch veins will be treated in the same session.
- Confirm the follow-up ultrasound schedule.
- Ask how they assess and reduce blood clot risk.
For visitors
Many people schedule EVLA with a check-up a few days later. Seomyeon connects to Busan Station on Line 1 and to Gimhae Airport via the light rail and Line 2.
Key facts
- Treats: refluxing great or small saphenous veins and some accessory veins
- Access: needle puncture, usually near the knee or ankle
- Anesthesia: local tumescent anesthesia around the vein
- Procedure time: about 30–60 minutes per leg
- Downtime: walking immediately; desk work in about 1–3 days
- Aftercare: compression stockings for a period as advised; follow-up ultrasound
- Often combined with: phlebectomy or sclerotherapy for branches
Frequently asked questions
Is endovenous laser ablation painful?
Tumescent local anesthesia makes the procedure tolerable; most people feel pressure or warmth. Afterward, tightness and tenderness along the vein, similar to a pulled muscle, are common for a week or two.
How long is recovery after EVLA?
You walk immediately and most people return to desk work within 1–3 days. Strenuous exercise is usually avoided for about two weeks, and bruising fades over several weeks.
EVLA vs radiofrequency ablation: which is better?
Both are effective thermal methods with similar long-term results. Radiofrequency may cause slightly less early discomfort and bruising in some comparisons, while modern lasers have narrowed the difference. Surgeon experience matters most.
Do I need compression stockings after laser ablation?
Most clinics recommend compression stockings for a period after thermal ablation to reduce discomfort and bruising. The duration varies, so follow your doctor's specific instructions.
Does the treated vein disappear?
The closed vein turns into scar tissue and is gradually absorbed over months. Blood flows through healthy deep veins instead, so circulation is not compromised.
